Attendance

*Taken from the HMS Student Handbook - for more information, See Student Handbook Here

Per Board Policies JH, JHB, and JHCA, each student is expected to be in attendance every day that school is in session. The school assumes that both the student and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) are aware that the school has claim on their student’s time and he/she is obligated to be in class every day of the school year unless excused for illness or other unusual circumstances. The education of each student is the joint responsibility of the home and the school. Only through cooperation can the student be assured of receiving all educational advantages available. Student participation in class activities,
listening to presentations, clarifications and explanations, and attendance at school assembly programs are considered an integral part of the educational program. It is impossible to gain the full significance of any class experience through makeup work.

Heritage Middle School is committed to the philosophy that every student should attend his or her classes every day. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for academic growth and development. Each student should be aware that class participation is considered part of his or her achievement in each class. Students who receive an excused absence shall be allowed a reasonable time to make up missed assignments. For unexcused absences (no verification from parent, truancy) the student may not be allowed to make up work. A student should understand that absences, whether excused or unexcused, might have a negative impact on their learning.

The Chino Valley Unified School District is committed to providing an appropriate education to all students including those with chronic health conditions resulting from illness, disease or accident. Instructional provisions will be determined on an individual basis to ensure continuous learning that is integrated with the regular education program as much as possible. No student certified as having a chronic health condition will be penalized for absences as long as absences are due solely to illness, disease or accident. Chronic illnesses need to be documented in the Health Office.

EXCUSED ABSENCE: An absence caused by illness of the student, by illness or death in the family, by medical or dental appointment, or by other unusual circumstances is considered to be an excused absence. All excused absences must be authenticated by a telephone call and/or note from the student’s parent or guardian within 24 hours of the absence. Contact the school attendance office.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: An absence that is regarded by the school as unnecessary, avoidable or where truth has been averted is considered to be an unexcused absence. This type of absence includes absences not verified by a parent or guardian, as well as truancy. The student will not be allowed to make up work as a result of an unexcused absence. The parent/guardian shall contact the school on the day of an absence, stating the reasons of the absence. If the school does not receive prior notice of a student’s absence, efforts will be made to contact the parent/guardian of the absent student on the initial day of the absence. Notes excusing the absence will be accepted for those without
phone service upon the first day of the student’s return to school.

• Students are not allowed to be on campus before 7:05 a.m. and are expected to leave campus by 3:30p.m. Exceptions will be made for before and after school activities/events.
• Parents/guardians are responsible for reporting any type of student absence. Parents may report the
reason for absences by calling Heritage Middle School at (928) 636-4464 to leave a message on the
attendance voice mail. Parents can also email [email protected] to report their child’s absence. The office is staffed between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on school days. Failure to contact by 4:00 p.m. on the day of the absence will result in an unexcused absence.
• Parents who cannot call due to extenuating circumstances must write a note explaining the reason for
the absence. Students are to bring this note to the office upon returning to school.
• It is the parents’ responsibility to notify the office, by calling (928) 636-4464, if the student will be
arriving late. When arriving late, students must report to the school office for a pass to get into class.
Students leaving early must be signed out by an authorized adult in person. A student cannot be
released by the parent or guardian calling the office. The parent or guardian must be in the office
before the student will be called out of class. Leaving campus without permission during the school day
is not permitted at any time, including lunch periods. Heritage Middle School is a closed campus.
Students who leave without permission will be considered truant and will result in disciplinary action.
• Students with notes from parents regarding appointments off campus must still be signed out in the office by an adult before leaving. Upon arrival back to school, students must sign in at the office. Those who do not follow this procedure may be issued detentions or be considered truant.
• A parent cannot excuse a student from attending class while the student is still on campus. If a student is in the building he/she must attend all scheduled classes.
• Students, with the exception of doctor’s appointments, must attend all scheduled classes on the school day of which they participate in extracurricular activities.
• It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with teachers to obtain all work missed for planned absence(s). Please email teachers to request homework during your child’s unplanned absence(s). Parents may call the front office for assistance. Homework will be available for pick up the following school day.
• If parents need to get a message to their child, please call the office by 2 p.m.

Per Chino Valley Unified School District Governing Board Policy: JH-R Student Absences
The regular school attendance of a child of school age is required by state law. Regular school attendance is essential for success in school; therefore, absences shall be excused only for necessary and important reasons. Such reasons include illness, bereavement, other family emergencies, and observance for major religious holidays of the family’s faith.

● After five (5) days of absence in any grading period, the parents will be contacted by telephone and by letter of the school’s concern for lack of attendance.
● After eight (8) days of absence in any grading period, a letter will be sent to the parents notifying them of the absence problem.
● After ten (10) days of absence in any grading period, another letter will be sent to the home, and parents may be asked to attend a conference at the school involving the parents, administrator, teacher or teachers, and others as deemed necessary (nurse, child, etc.) At the principal’s discretion, a truancy referral may be made to the court system.
● Absences beyond twenty (20) days may result in the student being retained at the end of the term and being required to repeat the grade. If it is determined the absences were a result of truancy, a juvenile referral will be made to the court system.
● If an extended absence is unavoidable, the school will work with the parents in providing assignments and materials for the student.
